How To Elope In The Redwoods | Oregon Elopement Photographer

So, you want to know how to elope in the Redwoods? Throw tradition out the window and opt for a jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring elopement in the mystical Redwoods of Northern California, and buckle up because you’re in for an unforgettable ride through nature’s grandest cathedral!

Picture this: towering trees reaching for the sky, dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy, and the scent of earth and pine enveloping you in a hug. Yep, that’s the Redwoods for you – but before you start envisioning yourself exchanging vows amidst the giants, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty details.

Why Elope in the Redwoods

First of all, let’s just take a moment to appreciate how insanely beautiful the Redwoods are. These trees are massive — like, “wow, I feel like an actual tiny woodland creature” levels of massive. They create this intimate, otherworldly atmosphere that feels straight out of a fairy tale. If you’ve been looking for a place that blends epic and romantic, then congrats, you’ve found it!

Eloping in Redwoods also gives you that soft, dreamy light photographers like me go crazy for. It’s the best mood lighting ever! And one of the main reasons my couples have loved eloping here is that you don’t have to hike miles to get the views. There are plenty of accessible locations where you can get the full Redwoods magic without breaking much sweat.

Where to Elope in the Redwoods

Alright, so where should you actually go for your elopement? The Redwoods stretch from Northern California into Southern Oregon, so you’ve got tons of options. Here are some of my absolute favorite spots!

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park (Northern California)

If you want that classic towering redwood vibe, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is the place. It’s one of the most jaw-dropping parks in the entire Redwoods system. The trees here are ancient, massive, and packed so close together that you feel like you’ve stepped into a secret forest cathedral. Plus, it’s less touristy than some of the other redwood locations, and it’s super easy to access. There are beautiful spots right from the roadside or with an easy walk.

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Northern California)

Ever seen Jurassic Park? Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park literally looks like a scene straight out of the movie because that is where it was filmed! It’s home to Fern Canyon, one of the most magical spots you’ll ever see (it’s covered in lush, vibrant green ferns and has this quiet, mystical feel). If you want a mix of epic forest and a little bit of adventure, this one’s for you.

Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park (Northern California)

Want both the Redwoods and a beach nearby? Say no more. Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park has insane coastal views and dense forest scenery, making it perfect if you can’t decide between a woodsy elopement or a beachy one (spoiler: you can do both!).

Humboldt Redwoods State Park (Northern California)

Home to the famous Avenue of the Giants, Humboldt Redwoods State Park is a total dream for elopements. If you want a location where you can say your vows right on one of the most scenic drives in California, surrounded by towering trees, this is the spot. Plus, there are plenty of easy trails leading to magical groves.

To elope here, you must apply for a special use permit. Reservations are accepted up to six months in advance. Submit your special event permit application as detailed here.

Muir Woods National Monument (Near San Francisco, CA)

If you don’t want to venture too far from the city but still want a breathtaking Redwoods experience, Muir Woods is your best bet. It’s just outside of San Francisco and has some seriously stunning old-growth trees. (Heads up: It can get busy, so plan for a weekday + sunrise elopement if possible!).

You’ll need to apply for a special use permit to elope at Muir Woods, and you can learn more about it here.

Redwoods National Park (Northern California)

Redwoods National Park is home to some of the tallest trees on Earth. It’s massive, packed with tons of different trails and secluded groves, and even has areas where the forest meets the ocean. Talk about dreamy!

Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor (Oregon)

You can get jaw-dropping Redwoods scenery plus some of the most epic coastal cliffs you’ve ever seen. This stretch of Oregon’s coast is wild, dramatic, and so stunning. If you want a Redwoods elopement with a little bit of that rugged PNW coastline, Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor is your spot.

A permit might not be necessary here for small, low-impact ceremonies of up to 50 people. However, it’s always a good idea to check with park management!

More About Redwood Elopement Permits

Jedediah Smith, Del Norte Coast, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Parks are part of the California State Park system, and YES, you’ll need a special event permit for your ceremony. Here’s how to apply for the permit:

  • Choose Your Spot: There are pre-approved locations like Templeman Grove, Organ Donor’s Grove, River Trail, Merriman Grove, Zig Zag #2, Schmidt Grove, and Prairie Creek Amphitheater. Each spot has its own vibe and capacity limits. Other locations within these parks may be selected but availability is subject to review.
  • Apply for the Permit: Once you’ve picked your dream location, you’ll need to fill out a special event permit application. The application process is detailed here.

Redwood National Park is managed by the National Park Service, this park also requires a special use permit for weddings and elopements. Here’s what to do:

  • Pick a Location: Pre-approved sites include Crescent Beach Day Use Area, Crescent Beach Overlook, High Bluff Overlook, Lost Man Creek Gate, and Berry Glen.
  • Submit Your Application: Complete the special use permit application and the threatened and endangered species addendum. Email these forms to the permit coordinator at REDW_Special_Use_Permits@nps.gov.
  • Fees: The standard application fee is $100 for pre-approved sites. If you’re eyeing a different spot, the fee is $200, and additional review time is needed.

Best Time of Year To Elope in the Redwoods

Summer – Considered the “high season” for visiting the redwoods, you’ll have sunny weather but also lots of crowds to contend with. If you have to have a summer elopement then I recommend choosing a sunrise start time for your ceremony.

Fall – This is a gorgeous time to visit! The summer crowds have dissipated and the weather is cooler. There’s a higher chance of rain but the huge tree canopy will most likely block out the majority of the rain drops. Fall is perfect for avoiding crowds.

Winter – A super underrated time to visit the redwoods. You’ll most likely have the entire park to yourself as this is when the least amount of people tend to visit.

Spring – Also an amazing time to have your elopement in the redwoods! The summer crowds haven’t started yet and the sun is just starting to peek out again after the winter season.

Where to Stay

Choosing where to stay is also an important decision in your elopement adventure. The right Airbnb or lodge will help you soak in the experience without spending too much time on the road. Staying near your chosen elopement location means more time to enjoy the day and less time commuting. Although, road trips can absolutely be fun, and you can always find stops along the way for spontaneous adventures, epic views, and coffee breaks at quirky roadside cafés!

I love Crescent City, CA, and Brookings, OR, for a good home base for Redwoods elopements. Here are some great Airbnbs in those areas.

Your chosen accommodation could really enhance your overall elopement experience, especially if you want to chill by a cozy fireplace or stargaze from a hot tub! Try to find the best vacation rental, lodge, or hotel to help you bring that vision to life.

Fun Redwoods Elopement Activity Ideas

Once you’ve got your permit squared away and now that you know how to elope in the redwoods, it’s time to plan the rest of your elopement adventure. I am a big believer that your elopement day is about so much more than just getting married! It’s about celebrating love in a way that feels uniquely you.

Think about the little moments that make your relationship special, and weave them into your day or a cool adventure you could do at your chosen elopement location! Here are some ideas:

  • Go on a hike
  • Have a scenic picnic
  • Exchange love letters
  • Write your vows together
  • Stargaze on the coast
  • Explore tidepools
  • Cook breakfast together
  • Share a thermos of coffee/hot cocoa
  • Soak in a hot tub at the Airbnb at the end of the night
  • Visit a brewery

… the options truly are endless!

Redwoods Elopement Cost

Eloping in the Redwoods can be as simple and budget-friendly as paying for your elopement permit, marriage license, and park entrance fee. If you’re going for the absolute minimalist experience, you could spend just a few hundred bucks and have an unforgettable day.

But let’s be real though, this is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and it’s so worth it to splurge a little to make it extra special. Investing in a dreamy Airbnb, hiring an amazing photographer (hi, I’d love to help!), getting a stunning bouquet, and even planning some fun experiences like a private picnic or a sunset sail can turn your elopement into a full-blown experience instead of just a quick “I do.”

This is your love story, your epic adventure! Make it as magical as you want it to be!

Things To Keep In Mind For Your Redwoods Elopement

  • The redwoods are remote which means you most likely can’t just zip into a Target or even a gas station if you need something.
  • Make sure to fill up on gas on your way out to the redwoods, we don’t want to chance running out!
  • Cell phone coverage is limited so be sure to download any maps you’ll need ahead of time.
  • Stock up the car with extra water and snacks just in case.
  • Some of the roads are dirt so if you’re nervous about getting stuck then this might be the opportunity to rent a fun Jeep!
  • Always bring your rain gear – weather is unpredictable and you can get a small rain shower at any time. Clear umbrellas are super cute in photos!

When I'm not behind the camera, I love spending time with my dog hiking the beautiful Florida trails, out on my paddle board in our local springs, or spending quality time with my husband exploring local events. When it's been too long since my last beach day, I have cravings for that perfect mix of saltwater and ocean air.
