Ever dreamed of ditching the traditional wedding and running off on your own epic adventure instead? Well, Jess and Trevor took that idea quite literally for their San Diego elopement, complete with medieval armor, Dungeons & Dragons, a handfasting ceremony, and their two adorable doggos!
They chose Julian, a small mountain town just outside San Diego that they already love visiting together. With its rolling hills, oak trees, and rugged mountain scenery, it was the perfect setting for the adventure and fantasy-inspired elopement they had in mind.
We planned a full day of activities split between morning and sunset, with time for a private ceremony, a picnic, D&D, sunset portraits in the mountains, and some seriously cool nighttime photos. See how we made this day happen!
One of my favorite things about photographing elopements is helping couples find THE perfect location for them. And for Jess and Trevor, Julian was already one of their favorite places to visit, so choosing to get married here made perfect sense!
If you’ve never heard of Julian, it’s a historic mountain town about an hour east of San Diego, known for its old-fashioned charm, apple orchards, and beautiful scenery. It’s such a different experience from the beaches and palm trees most people imagine when they think of Southern California.
I loved that we could be so close to San Diego yet feel like we’d traveled somewhere entirely different. The oak-covered hills, open meadows, and winding mountain roads made everything feel a little more rustic and adventurous. With Jess and Trevor’s love of fantasy and Dungeons & Dragons, I swear it felt like we were gearing up for a quest!
And what’s especially cool about this area is how much variety you can find without traveling all over Southern California. You’ve got peaceful nature preserves, beautiful countryside, cozy places to stay, and the nearby Laguna Mountains with incredible views over the desert.
If you’re looking for a San Diego elopement location that feels a little different from the typical beach ceremony, Julian is definitely worth checking out.
After getting ready and a first look, we headed to Santa Ysabel Preserve, a beautiful nature preserve near Julian filled with rolling grasslands, oak trees, and rather private trails. The setting was absolutely perfect for the fantasy-inspired ceremony they had planned. They brought along their two dogs, Ghost and Prince, because of course they needed to be part of the adventure!
One of Jess and Trevor’s biggest priorities was a ceremony that felt private. They wanted to exchange their vows without anyone else listening in, so I gave them plenty of space. And when I say space, I mean I didn’t even get close enough to hear what they were saying!
This is actually a request I get from couples sometimes, and I’m always happy to accommodate it. You can absolutely have beautiful photographs of your ceremony without having your photographer standing right next to you listening to every word. If you want your vows to be something only the two of you hear, I’ll hang back and document everything from a distance.
Jess and Trevor also incorporated a handfasting ceremony into their elopement, which fit their fantasy-inspired celebration so well.
Handfasting is a tradition in which a couple’s hands are symbolically bound together with ribbons or cords. It’s where the expression “tying the knot” is often associated with wedding ceremonies, and it’s such a fun way to personalize your vows, especially if you love historical or fantasy-inspired traditions.
With their hands wrapped together in beautifully braided cords, surrounded by the quiet countryside, their ceremony looked like something you could imagine finding in the pages of a fantasy novel.
After their ceremony, Jess and Trevor settled into the grass for a picnic. And because these two were going all in on their adventure theme, this wasn’t your typical fancy wedding picnic with elaborate decorations. They had a picnic basket, whole loaf of bread, and a purple cake, and enjoyed a little time together out in nature.
I loved how simple and personal this part of their day was. They didn’t feel the need to fill every minute with activities or rush off to another location. They could just hang out, enjoy their food, and spend time together before the next part of their adventure.
This is something I always encourage couples to think about when planning their elopement. Your day doesn’t have to revolve around constantly taking photos! You can build in activities you genuinely enjoy, whether that’s having a picnic, going for a hike, playing a game together, or relaxing somewhere with a beautiful view.
And if you’re thinking about bringing your dogs along for your Julian elopement, Santa Ysabel Preserve is a great place to look into. Dogs are allowed on designated trails when leashed, but you’ll want to check the current park rules and plan around the weather, especially during the warmer months.
After our morning adventure, we took a break before meeting back up for one of the most unique elopement activities I’ve photographed: a little Dungeons & Dragons session!
Jess and Trevor love fantasy and tabletop games, so incorporating D&D into their wedding day was something they’d wanted from the beginning. And I mean, WHY NOT?!
They had their character sheets, dice, books, and other gaming supplies all ready to go. Instead of squeezing in another traditional wedding activity just because that’s what couples are “supposed” to do, they made time for something they actually enjoy together.
I think that’s one of the coolest things about planning an elopement. You can take the things you already love doing as a couple and make them part of your wedding experience. Maybe that’s bringing a favorite board game to your cabin, reading together by the fire, or planning a whole D&D adventure.
For Jess and Trevor, their wedding day already had all the makings of a pretty great fantasy campaign, and we hadn’t even gotten to the armor yet!
Once we finished our D&D session, it was time for the next part of the adventure! Jess and Trevor changed into their medieval-inspired armor outfits, and we headed toward the Laguna Mountains for sunset. And oh my gosh, these outfits were SO freaking cool!
Our destination was a scenic overlook in the Laguna Mountains with sweeping views over the rugged backcountry and desert landscape. This area is seriously underrated for elopements near San Diego. Instead of the typical coastal scenery, you get rocky cliffs, mountain ridges, and huge open skies that look absolutely incredible during golden hour.
We spent time exploring the rocky landscape and taking portraits as the sun began to set. Between the dramatic scenery and Jess and Trevor’s armor, it really did look like we’d stepped into an entirely different world. They had told me during the planning process that sunset photos were a huge priority, so I was especially excited that we could build this part of the day around the light.
On our way through the mountains, we also stopped at an overlook where Jess and Trevor enjoyed some cider from a local cidery in the back of their truck. The couple also told me that they really wanted nighttime photos, so our adventure wasn’t quite over when the sun went down!
As the sky got darker, we brought out lanterns and continued taking portraits in the Laguna Mountains. The warm glow against the blue evening sky looked SO good with their medieval armor and capes. We also took some beautiful portraits as the last bit of light disappeared, with the mountains fading into the distance behind them.
After our sunset adventure, we headed back to their Airbnb property, where they did a tarot pull, and we took a few more photos under the stars. It was such an epic way to finish the day!
One of the reasons I loved Jess and Trevor’s elopement so much was how completely personal it was. They weren’t interested in having a big traditional wedding, and instead of trying to find ways to make those traditions work for them, they planned a day around things they genuinely loved.
They chose a location that was already special to their relationship, brought their dogs along, incorporated handfasting into their ceremony, made time for Dungeons & Dragons, and spent the evening exploring the mountains in medieval armor. And we managed to fit everything they wanted into their day!
If you’re thinking about eloping in San Diego, I hope their wedding gives you a little inspiration to get creative with your own plans. Maybe your perfect elopement includes a quiet morning in the mountains, an afternoon spent exploring somewhere new, and a sunset picnic. Or maybe, like Jess and Trevor, you want to throw on some armor and head out on a fantasy adventure!
Whatever you’re into, we can find a way to make your wedding day feel like you.
