Cloudland Canyon Elopement in North Georgia

When Taynia & Pete first reached out to me, they had their hearts set on the mountains out west. The only problem was that some of their family members couldn’t make a cross-country trip work, so instead of scrapping the mountain dream entirely, we started exploring closer to home. That’s how we ended up at Cloudland Canyon State Park in North Georgia, and it was perfect!

A dramatic canyon carved into Lookout Mountain, waterfalls tucked into the gorge below, and sweeping forest ridge views. Honestly, the Southeast doesn’t get enough credit for how stunning it is, and this Cloudland Canyon elopement shows exactly why I will always love pointing couples in this direction.

The Couple

Taynia & Pete are the type of couple who don’t do anything halfway. This was a second marriage for both of them, and rather than treating that as a reason to keep things small and quiet, they leaned all the way in. They decided to take their RV, since they both love a campground adventure, and brought their whole family with them. Their families showed up to celebrate them!

It was so moving to witness the two families coming together, kids watching their parents exchange vows, everyone cheering and toasting afterward at a local bar like the best kind of elopement reception. It was joyful and real, and I loved every second of it.

 

Why Choose a Cloudland Canyon Elopement?

Cloudland Canyon is a hidden gem for elopements because no one could imagine Georgia holding such amazing scenery. The park sits on the western edge of Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia, and it offers something that’s surprisingly rare in an elopement location: multiple completely different landscapes all in one spot.

At the top, you have the canyon overlook, offering a dramatic, panoramic view of the gorge, with forested ridgelines stretching into the distance and the canyon floor far below. It’s an incredible ceremony spot with zero hiking required. Then, if you’re up for a short hike into the canyon, you reach Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls. Both waterfalls are surrounded by sandstone walls and lush greenery, creating a world completely different from the one above the overlook.

Most couples do both. Ceremony at the overlook, then a waterfall adventure for portraits. You essentially get two totally different backdrops in one morning, which is a huge win.

Plus, it’s an easy drive from Atlanta (about 2 hours) and Chattanooga (about 35 minutes). If your family is spread across the South and you want epic landscapes without a major travel burden, this is your spot.

Getting Ready

The morning started at their rental house, getting ready with their loved ones around. There were kids running around the kitchen, someone arranging flowers on the counter, and Taynia in her stunning beaded lace gown with that incredible embellished back detail. It was a nice and relaxed start to their day!

The First Look

Taynia and Pete had their first look at the balcony of their rental, and it was so sweet!

Vows at the Canyon Overlook

For their ceremony, we used the main canyon overlook. Standing at the railing with the entire gorge stretched out behind them, layers of green ridgeline disappearing into the distance, clouds rolling overhead, and their loved ones by their sides. It was so lovely seeing the groom tear up during their vows, and I could really see how much they cared for each other.

 

The Waterfalls

After the ceremony and some family portraits, we hiked down into the canyon to Cherokee Falls for their portraits. The waterfall drops into a wide, rocky pool surrounded by sheer sandstone walls and green moss, and you can actually stand on the boulders right in front of it for photos. The scale of it is incredible. It’s not a long hike to get there (though the steps back up are a workout!), and it’s absolutely worth it for the backdrop.

Taynia put on a custom leather jacket with “Mrs. Burns” painted on the back, and they both stood there in front of the falls just soaking it all in. It was one of my favorite moments from their whole day!

The Celebration

After the park, the whole crew piled into their cars and went to a local bar to celebrate. It felt like a cozy family gathering filled with joy, toasts, and everyone crammed around a table laughing. It was the perfect way to end their day!

 

What to Know About Eloping at Cloudland Canyon

Cloudland Canyon State Park is located in Rising Fawn, Georgia, which is about 35 minutes from downtown Chattanooga, TN, and about 2 hours from Atlanta. It’s an easy drive from anywhere in the Southeast, making it one of the most accessible mountain elopement locations in the region. The park entrance fee is just $5 per vehicle.

 

Cloudland Canyon Ceremony Locations

The Main Canyon Overlook: Right off the parking area, no hiking required. Panoramic canyon views, dramatic and accessible. Perfect for couples with guests of varying mobility levels or anyone who wants epic scenery without a long walk.

Cherokee Falls & Hemlock Falls: A short but steep hike down into the canyon. The falls are stunning with sheer sandstone walls, rushing water, and mossy boulders. Keep in mind that the waterfalls can run low or dry up in late summer/early fall (typically September–October), so plan your date accordingly.

 

Cloudland Canyon Elopement Permits

At the moment, it is completely free, and no permit is required to get married here, making it great for couples who don’t want to deal with the permit process or who are on a shorter timeline and can’t apply for one.

Best Time of Year for Your Elopement

Spring is one of the best times for a Cloudland Canyon elopement. The waterfalls are running strong from spring rainfall, the forest is that vibrant, electric green, the wildflowers are out, and temperatures are comfortable.

Fall is a great choice if you’d love to exchange your vows surrounded by stunning fall foliage. Just note that the waterfalls can be running low in early fall

Summer here is hot and humid, so it is best to opt for an early-morning elopement to beat the heat and avoid the summer crowds. The park gets busy on summer weekends, so I’d recommend eloping during a weekday to get the most privacy.

 

Where to Stay

One of the things that makes Cloudland Canyon so perfect for RV couples and camping-lovers is that you can actually stay in the park itself! There are recently updated cottages, quirky yurts, and campsites all within the park boundaries, so your whole elopement adventure is literally right outside your door. Book through the Georgia State Parks website well in advance, especially for spring and fall weekends.
