Two-Day Blue Ridge Parkway Elopement in North Carolina | Sarah & William

If you’ve ever dreamed of saying your vows surrounded by rolling blue-green mountains that stretch as far as the eye can see, then a Blue Ridge Parkway elopement might just be your perfect day.

Sarah and William fell in love with these mountains after moving to North Carolina, so when it came time to plan their wedding, choosing this spot made sense. Their two-day elopement was funky, personal, deeply intentional, and packed with so many beautiful details that reflected exactly who they are as a couple

They spent day one celebrating with their loved ones, and then on day two, we headed into the mountains for a private vow exchange, a waterfall adventure, and a sunset picnic at one of their favorite places along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was such an epic elopement experience!

Why Elope on the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Sarah and William moved to North Carolina and completely fell in love with the East Coast mountains, and I totally get why! The Blue Ridge Mountains have a completely different vibe from places like Washington or Colorado. Instead of jagged peaks, you get layers and layers of softer, rolling mountains covered in forest. In the right light, those ridges really do take on the hazy blue-green color that gave the Blue Ridge its name.

Fun fact: There’s even an ancient geological connection between the Appalachians and the mountains across the Atlantic. Before the continents split apart and the Atlantic Ocean formed, the Appalachian mountain system continued into what is now the United Kingdom and western Europe, which might explain why parts of the Blue Ridge can feel a little reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands.

Beyond the scenery, one of the things I love most about planning a Blue Ridge Parkway elopement is how many different experiences you can fit into one trip. You can explore waterfalls, hike through forests, stop at overlooks, have a mountaintop picnic, or stay in a cozy cabin. It is a great choice no matter your adventure level!

Day One: Celebrating With Family

Sarah and William wanted their family to be a meaningful part of their wedding, so the first day of their elopement was devoted to celebrating with them. And I LOVE how personal they made it!

Instead of ordering a traditional bouquet, they invited their guests to help create Sarah’s bouquet for the ceremony. Everyone added flowers, turning something as simple as a wedding bouquet into this really sweet little ritual involving the people they loved.

After the ceremony, they stayed together for an intimate reception catered by Chef Sway. There was food spread across the kitchen, family gathered around one long table, lots of color, and plenty of time to simply celebrate without feeling like they needed to rush through a packed reception schedule. And their dog was also dressed for the occasion! So cute!

Day Two: A Secret Waterfall + Private Vows

For their second day, Sarah and William wanted to revisit places they already loved. One of their stops was a secret waterfall they had visited together before, so returning there on their elopement weekend was extra special. This is where they exchanged private vows away from everyone else. They also incorporated a Scottish handfasting ceremony into their vow exchange.

A handfasting ceremony traditionally involves tying or wrapping cords or ribbons around a couple’s joined hands to symbolize their commitment to one another. Sarah and William’s version fit the whole day so beautifully, especially surrounded by mossy forest and rushing water.

Ending Their Blue Ridge Parkway Elopement at Black Balsam Knob

After exploring the waterfall, Sarah and William headed toward one of their favorite areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway: Black Balsam Knob. If you haven’t been, this is one of those places that takes your breath away. It’s a grassy, bald mountaintop with 360-degree panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The rolling peaks fade into layer after layer of blue-green ridges, and during golden hour the light is just chef’s kiss.

Here, Sarah and William spread out a blanket, unpacked champagne and snacks, and finally had a chance to sit down together after their adventure. We finished the night with some lantern photos, and it was the perfect ending to the most magical two days.

Why a Two-Day Elopement Worked So Well

One of the biggest misconceptions about eloping is that including family somehow means giving up the intimate part of the experience. It doesn’t! Sarah and William’s wedding is such a good example of how easily you can have both. By spreading their celebration across two days, they never had to choose between spending meaningful time with family and having a private adventure together.

If you’re someone who wants your family there but also dreams about exchanging private vows somewhere secluded, I can’t recommend this approach enough. Your elopement doesn’t have to happen within an eight-hour block just because that’s how traditional weddings are usually structured.

You can make an entire weekend out of it.

Tips for Planning Your Blue Ridge Parkway Elopement

Thinking about eloping along the Blue Ridge Parkway? Here’s everything you need to know to make your day incredible!

  • Think about what kind of experience you actually want. The Parkway stretches for hundreds of miles, and different areas can feel completely different. Some locations offer drive-up overlooks, while others connect to waterfalls or trails that require a bit more effort. If you tell me what you’re envisioning, I can help narrow it down so you aren’t trying to choose between approximately one billion pretty mountain views.
  • You’ll also want to pay attention to the time of year. Spring brings fresh greenery and waterfalls, summer is lush and warm, and fall is obviously incredible if you’re dreaming about colorful mountain views. Winter can be gorgeous too, but parts of the Parkway regularly close for weather, ice, construction, and other conditions, so flexibility is important. The National Park Service recommends checking current road status while you’re planning.
  • Cell service is limited along many parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway, so download your maps and any playlists ahead of time.
  • The Parkway has a speed limit of 45 mph, and the winding roads take longer to drive than you’d think. Build extra travel time into your timeline so you’re not rushing.

Blue Ridge Parkway Elopement Permits

The Blue Ridge Parkway is managed by the National Park Service, which means you will need a Special Use Permit for your ceremony. Here’s what you should know:

  • You’ll need to submit a Special Use Permit application to the Blue Ridge Parkway’s permit coordinator. I recommend applying at least 60-90 days in advance.
  • There is a non-refundable fee of $150 due at the time of application.
  • The permit authorizes a two-hour wedding/elopement/vow exchange ceremony on the approved date/time at the approved location.
  • Ceremonies are allowed only in specific locations listed on the NPS site, and you can check them out here! The location will still be accessible to the public, and depending on the location, you can only have up to 25 people total in your party (including your officiant and photographer).

As your North Carolina elopement photographer, navigating permits is something I help all my couples with!
