Looking for a way to celebrate your love story that’s as unique and adventurous as you are? Trying to figure out how to elope in Washington? Then this guide is for you! This stunning state offers a variety of breathtaking landscapes, from snow-capped mountains to lush forests and rugged coastlines. Plus, with its easy legal requirements, eloping in Washington is a stress-free way to tie the knot. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your perfect Washington elopement.
One of the best things about Washington is the variety. In a single day, you could say your vows beneath a waterfall, hike to an alpine lake for portraits, and end the evening with your toes in the sand, watching the sun dip into the Pacific. The landscapes here are unreal, and you don’t need to be an expert hiker or backpacker to experience them. There are plenty of drive-up locations and easy-access trails that still offer jaw-dropping views
Another great thing about eloping here is the weather. While Washington is known for its rainy reputation, the truth is that the state enjoys mild weather throughout much of the year. This means you can plan your elopement for any season without worrying about extreme temperatures or snowstorms.
Plus, the food and drink are amazing. Washington is home to some of the best craft breweries and wineries in the country, not to mention a thriving foodie scene. Whether you want to celebrate with a gourmet dinner or a toast with local beer or wine, you’ll find plenty of options to suit your taste.
And lastly, the adventure opportunities are endless. Washington is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts, with endless opportunities for hiking, kayaking, skiing, and more. Why not turn your elopement into an unforgettable adventure, exploring the state’s stunning natural landscapes together?
When you’re deciding on where you want to elope in Washington keep in mind the time of year and day of the week that you want to elope. Some areas like the national parks are very busy in the summer season, however if you want to elope in the mountains (like North Cascades National Park) your best chance at ideal weather conditions is in summer. Other areas like the Olympic peninsula are accessible year round, but the coast is much rainier so you’ll want to keep that in mind.
Here are some of my favorite places to elope in Washington:
Olympic National Park is the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure elopement spot. Here you can start your day exchanging vows in a misty rainforest, then drive less than an hour to say your first “just married” cheers on a rugged beach. Some of the best elopement locations here include:
You will need a special use permit to elope at Olympic National Park. You can download a Special Use Permit application to apply for a Special Use Permit.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little less crowded but still jaw-droppingly beautiful, Gifford Pinchot National Forest is a hidden gem in Washington state. Home to old-growth forests, volcanic landscapes, and stunning waterfalls, this area is perfect for couples who want a private, wild setting. There are incredible spots like Panther Creek Falls for an intimate waterfall ceremony or the Mount Adams area for wide-open alpine views. It’s an amazing alternative to some of the busier national parks.
Yes, you will need a special use permit to elope here, and you can get more information here!
Mount Rainier is the kind of place that makes your jaw drop, no matter how many times you’ve seen it. The massive, snow-covered peak dominates the landscape, creating one of the most stunning elopement backdrops in Washington. Some of the best places to elope in the park include:
To hold a ceremony within the park, you’ll need to secure a Special Use Permit. You can learn about approved ceremony locations and the permit process here.

If you want dramatic mountain peaks, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and a complete escape from the crowds, North Cascades National Park is calling your name. It’s one of the lesser-visited national parks in the U.S., which means you can have those breathtaking landscapes all to yourself. Some of the most epic locations here include:
You will need a permit to elope here! To get your Special Use Permit, you’ll need to contact the office at North Cascades National Park. They don’t offer much information on their website, so my advice is to send them an email with your wedding details (date, guests, locations you’re interested in for the ceremony) and wait to hear back from the park.

For couples who love the idea of a peaceful island elopement, the San Juan Islands could be the option for you! Located off the coast of northwest Washington, these islands have a slower pace, stunning shorelines, and some of the best whale-watching in the country. You can rent a cozy Airbnb, exchange vows on a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean, and spend your day exploring the charming seaside towns.
Depending on your chosen location, you’ll likely need a special use permit. Learn about it all here!
One of the most iconic waterfalls in Washington, Snoqualmie Falls is an incredible elopement location just a short drive from Seattle. The 268-foot waterfall is a breathtaking backdrop, especially when the mist rises off the river below. There are accessible viewpoints as well as hidden trails for a more private experience. Plus, the Salish Lodge nearby is perfect for a romantic post-ceremony stay.
If you’re planning a ceremony at the park adjacent to the falls, check with the Snoqualmie Falls Park management for any permit requirements. For events at the nearby Salish Lodge, coordinate directly with their team.
If you want stunning coastal views, rugged cliffs, and dramatic bridges, Deception Pass is an amazing choice. This park is perfect for couples who love the idea of a seaside elopement with a mix of beaches, tide pools, and epic cliffs. The bridge itself is one of the most photographed spots in Washington, and the trails nearby lead to gorgeous, secluded spots overlooking the water.
To elope at Deception Pass State Park, you’ll need to obtain a Special Activity Permit from the Washington State Parks Department. You can learn all about it here!
For couples who love winter sports or just want an epic mountain backdrop, Mt. Baker Ski Area is a fantastic option. Even in the summer, this area offers incredible alpine scenery, with wildflower-filled meadows and glacier-capped peaks. In the winter, it turns into a snowy paradise, perfect for a cozy, adventure-filled elopement.
Since this area operates on public land managed by the U.S. Forest Service, a Special Use Permit will likely be required. You can learn more about that here!
Cozy Retreats nestled in Washington’s captivating landscapes, A-Frame cabins provide an intimate and cozy setting for your elopement. These charming hideaways blend rustic charm with modern comfort, offering a romantic haven where you can celebrate your love in private. Imagine waking up to breathtaking views of towering mountains or serene lakes, with a crackling fireplace warming your hands. These cabins offer the perfect space for an intimate ceremony, with nature as your witness and a sense of tranquility enveloping your special day. Capture the essence of your love against the backdrop of nature’s beauty, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
If you elope at a private venue like these cabins, you typically won’t need a special use permit. However, always double-check with the property owner whether it is okay or not to use the property for your elopement.

Generally, YES. Depending on where you’re planning to elope, you might need a permit, especially in national and state parks. I covered some of the permit requirements for some locations above. If your dream location isn’t listed, I encourage you to do a quick Google search or call the park staff to find out whether or not you need a permit!
As a Washington elopement photographer, I help all my couples navigate the permits!
The best time to elope in Washington really depends on the kind of experience you want. If you’re all about wildflowers and sunshine, summer is your best bet. If you love the idea of misty, moody vibes, fall is perfect. Winter offers dreamy, snowy landscapes, while spring brings lush forests and roaring waterfalls. Here’s a bit better look into the seasons!
Summer is one of the best times to elope in Washington state. The snow has melted from the mountains, the wildflowers are in full bloom, and you’ll get the clearest views of those jaw-dropping peaks. Long daylight hours also give you plenty of time to explore, making it easy to plan an elopement that stretches from sunrise to sunset.
That said, late summer does bring a higher risk of wildfires, which can lead to smoky conditions in certain areas. If you want the summer vibes without the crowds, consider eloping on a weekday or choosing a less-traveled location.
Fall is great for cooler weather and vibrant fall colors, and there are also fewer crowds in the popular locations. Fall in Washington tends to be moodier, with more frequent rain and overcast days, so if you’re the type to embrace a little mist and fog for that extra dreamy atmosphere, this could be your perfect season.
My favorite locations for a fall elopement are Hurricane Ridge (for epic mountain views), Ruby Beach (for that wild, rugged coastline), and the Quinault Rainforest (where the fall colors look straight out of a fairytale).
If you want a full-on winter wonderland for your elopement, Washington absolutely delivers. Snow-covered evergreens, frozen waterfalls, and dramatic mountain landscapes make for an unforgettable backdrop. Mt. Rainier is one of the best spots for a winter elopement, thanks to the Paradise area staying open year-round—so even if other high-altitude locations are buried in snow, you can still get those incredible views.
Keep in mind that many of the other roads and trails close for the season, especially in higher-elevation areas like the North Cascades. If you are leaning towards a winter elopement here, make sure to bundle up, bring the right gear, and rent a cozy cabin to serve as plan B or just to warm up after your ceremony.
Spring is all about fresh, vibrant landscapes. As the snow melts, waterfalls are at their most powerful, the forests come alive with bright greenery, and the tourist crowds haven’t quite arrived yet. This makes it an ideal time to elope if you want those lush, overgrown PNW vibes without having to navigate peak-season visitors.
That said, trails can be muddy from all the rain, so waterproof boots and a flexible mindset are key. Olympic National Park is an incredible choice for spring elopement, with its roaring waterfalls and temperate rainforest bursting back to life. North Cascades National Park is another great option as the higher-elevation trails begin to open up later in the season.
First things first, the most important detail of how to elope in Washington – the legal requirements! Fortunately, the state makes it easy for couples to elope. Here’s what you’ll need:
To get started with your application, you can click here.
Once you have your license and witnesses, you’re ready to say “I do” wherever your hearts desire!
Choosing where to stay is also an important decision in your elopement adventure. The right Airbnb or lodge will help you soak in the experience without spending too much time on the road. Staying near your chosen elopement location means more time to enjoy the day and less time commuting.
Also, your chosen accommodation could really enhance your overall elopement experience, especially if you want to chill by a cozy fireplace or stargaze from a hot tub! Try to find the best vacation rental, lodge, or hotel to help you bring that vision to life.
Packwood is perfect for summertime elopements in Mount Rainier National Park. It is situated near the Stevens Canyon Road access, which is generally less busy than the Nisqually entrance. However, Packwood does get busy on Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend with a huge festival, so keep that in mind when planning your elopement.
If you are looking to elope in Olympic National Park, Port Angeles is a great area to make your home base on the peninsula. This quaint harbor town has cute shops and local restaurants, plus it is super close to the Hurrican Ridge entrance. The downside is that you’re further away from places like Ruby Beach (about 1.5 hours), but if you’re okay with a scenic drive, then you’ll be golden!
Perfect if you plan to spend more time near Ruby Beach or the Hoh Rainforest. Forks is only half an hour away from these gorgeous spots and is great if you’re a fan of Twilight. Every September, there’s a huge Twilight festival in Forks, which could be super fun to include in your elopement day!
A cute Bavarian-themed town surrounded by gorgeous mountain views, Leavenworth is perfect for couples who want some quaint, small-town vibes and gorgeous mountain views. For my couples who are flying into SEA-TAC, it is also really easily accessible from Seattle.
Mt. Baker: Hygge Hus Cabin, Rustic 70s A-frame, Cedar Point Cabin
Olympic NP: Kalaloch Lodge, Lake Crescent Lodge, Miller Tree Inn / Forks Cullen House
Mt. Rainier NP: Cozy River Cabin, Iron & Vine Treehouse, Owl’s Outpost

I am a big believer that your elopement day is about so much more than just getting married! It’s about celebrating love in a way that feels uniquely you.
Think about the little moments that make your relationship special, and weave them into your day or a cool adventure you could do at your chosen elopement location! Here are some ideas:
… the options truly are endless!
One of the best things about eloping is that you don’t need a massive vendor team to make your day incredible. However, choosing the right team can make all the difference in crafting a stress-free, unforgettable experience.
I recommend you start by booking your Washington elopement photographer first. I help you plan your perfect adventure from start to finish. From location scouting to timeline creation, day-of coordination, and personalized recommendations, I’m here to make sure your elopement is seamless and stress-free.
I always recommend working with professionals who specialize in elopements—they understand the unique flow of the day and know how to adapt to outdoor settings, unpredictable weather, and non-traditional timelines. Here are a few key vendors to consider:
Washington has plenty of options for officiants, from ordained ministers and judges to ship captains. You can also have a friend or family member get ordained online to officiate your ceremony. Or, go with a professional officiant who specializes in elopements.
I recommend you check out Officiant Grace, Officiant Jimmie
A stylist who specializes in elopements will know how to create a look that lasts through wind, mist, and adventure. Many are also happy to meet you at your cabin or trailhead for added convenience.
I recommend you check out Black Fern Beauty Co, Pacific Brides
Even when you’re eloping, you may want to have a bouquet, a flower crown, or maybe a boutonnière.
Here are some florists I recommend: Graystone Farm, Humble Bouquet, Caroline Reusen Floral Design
Just because you’re eloping doesn’t mean you have to skip an amazing meal. Whether it’s a picnic on the beach, a private chef cooking in your Airbnb, or a stop at your favorite brewery, there are plenty of ways to celebrate with delicious food!
